I started reading this book while reading the hunger game book because I know if I didn't then I would have been an emotional wreck. Surprisingly I did well.
This book isn't like the normal romance novels I read, mostly because all of them have been able to talk. These two main characters are actually deaf and actually can't hear at all. The guy in the story is named Devon he has hearing aids but it doesn't seem like he can hear with them if there isn't too much back ground noise. But Jas just can not hear at all.
This whole story gave me a huge different perspective on how it to live as a deaf person. My mom has hearing aids but she isn't completely deaf, low tones have been her problem but not her whole life. So simple hearing aids have done wonders. She learned ASL with her sister and learned some basic stuff. anyways this is so getting away from the book
Jas and Dev have been best friends since kindergarten and it's the sweetest relationship because I truly love a boy and girl bff. Even though I know where this goes.
Jas basically has been given the shitty end of the deal in life it seems. her father died from a heart attack and he used to own a bar and it's her dream to own one as well. Being deaf just doesn't stop her from doing what she loves. She gets evicted from her shady apartment and ends up living with Dev till she can find a new place but everything is expensive. ain't that the truth girl.
They have that super close relationship where it's totally okay for them to share a bed. They wear pajamas but its normal for them. Jas just hates handouts she doesn't like help. I totally understand the wanting to be independent.
Eventually with them living together they sorta make it not official dating and they are like friends with benefits. Dev hadn't really had a relationship longer than 3 weeks. Mostly cause you find out that he's been in love with Jas since forever so he cant give out his heart. its actually just truly adorable.
The bar that Jas works out closes down. It quite heartbreaking and now Jas just doesn't know what to do.
Dev and Jas get a yin and yang tattoo when they start dating. I mean its super cute but before it heals shit hits the fan.
With the way the story flows it is a slow going book it seems. I do love the writing in this book and how you do experience life with someone who cant hear and how finding a job just isn't easy even though they have lived with it their whole lives and they are more than capable of handling a job if they apply for it. Truthfully I actually want to start learning some ASL from reading this book. Learning a few words can go a long way in some things talking fully can take a few years if I actually try.
Anyways, so Jas clearly hates confrontation so with where she is gonna live and what's she gonna do Dev is deciding to stay with his family business as an accountant or be a social worker which is what he wants to do. being an accountant lets him take care of Jas but hates doing it. You learn a lot of sacrifices and what you should and shouldn't do when you love someone.
Jas basically just ends it without really talking because she's convinced that there is no future for them as she wants to run a bar while he has a totally different life picked out for them. They have a pregnancy scare and he buys her the plan B pill only she doesn't take it cause she knows she too close to her period for herself to be worried.
She ends up getting her period and sorta gets sad when she realized she does want to be a mom and Dev to be the dad.
On the other side of things Dev is going to this clients house because he too is also deaf and looking around pictures he sees this bar and find outs he owns Jas's dad old bar that just sits there. he comes up with this magically idea because deaf love helping the deaf and he tells her to meet up with him at the bar and tells her that he is allowing them to "make it happen" in a year and see where it goes and Dev's dad is going to co-sign a loan to help because family helps family. Its legit the sweetest thing ever.
Go forward a year and the bar is actually doing amazing. Dev proposes to Jas on the one year anniversary of being open and of course she says yes and its super sweet!
As far a romance novels go its a pretty tame love story but with the the deaf being a facture it changes the storyline and I really do love it.
The sex scenes they have are pretty basic to what I've read in the past but I didn't actually think it was going to be heavy on those scenes after reading a few pages.
Honestly the whole time I'm typing this my child is talking to me about dinosaurs, which isn't new but I am surprised on how well i can just keep saying mhm yes it is, good job sweety over and over while doing this. His obsession with dinosaurs is basically my obsession with books. he knows so many dinosaur names I am so damn impressed. I have learned so much in that area lol.
I might speed read through some small romance novels and then write a review about a book I got from a new author. my to read this is seriously never ending! I'm already at 67 books and my goal is 200 by the end of the year!
This book is written by Laura Brown and definitely recommend it if you want a soft heartful book about love and growing up.
